Ingrain Support

• The video must be public. Private, unlisted or members-only videos can’t be read.
• It needs captions or a transcript. If the source has no transcript available, there’s nothing to read. Try pasting the text directly instead.
• Not every site is supported. If a link fails, copy the transcript and paste it in as text — that always works.
• Very long recordings may take a while or hit a limit. Try a shorter section.

Reference detection is automated and it won’t be perfect. It reads a transcript, so anything the transcript got wrong — a misheard book name, a number transcribed incorrectly — carries through.

It also has to make judgement calls when a speaker paraphrases without naming a reference, or says something like “the next chapter.” Some of those it will catch; some it won’t.

That’s exactly why you review the list before it’s created. Remove anything wrong, and if it consistently misses a particular kind of reference, tell us — that feedback is genuinely useful.

The feature is rate limited to keep it working well for everyone and to prevent abuse. If you’ve hit a limit, wait a while and try again. If you have a legitimate reason to need more, get in touch.

• Open Ingrain. Widgets refresh from the app, so opening it once will bring the widget up to date.
• iOS controls widget refresh timing to save battery, so updates aren’t instant. This is normal and not something the app can override.
• Check Low Power Mode — it reduces background refresh significantly.
• Still stuck? Remove the widget and add it again.

Open the Ingrain app at least once after installing or updating — widgets don’t appear in the picker until the app has run. If it’s still missing, check that you’re on the latest version from the App Store.

If the session shows the headphones icon and the verse reference but never begins:

1. Keep the app in the foreground while it starts. The session needs the screen awake to begin. Once it’s running you can lock your phone.
2. Check your connection. Verse audio is generated and streamed from our servers. Audio you’ve heard before is cached and starts instantly; a new verse needs signal.
3. Close and reopen the session from Memorize → Hands-Free.
4. Try a verse you’ve already listened to — verses with cached audio start immediately.
5. On the web app, browser autoplay and screen-wake rules are stricter than on mobile. If a session won’t start in your browser, use the iPhone or Android app instead.

If it’s still stuck, tell us the verse reference and whether you’re on iPhone, Android or web — that narrows it down immediately.

That’s expected, and it catches most people out.

An audio session builds familiarity but doesn’t complete the milestone on its own. Go back to Memorize → Hands-Free and look for Complete Your Reviews — your verses will be listed there with a Review button. Tap it, complete the short on-screen review, and the milestone is recorded.

1. Check your device isn’t muted. On iPhone the physical silent switch mutes app audio even with the volume up.
2. Turn media volume up while audio is playing, so you’re adjusting media rather than ringer volume.
3. Disconnect Bluetooth — audio may be routing to a speaker or car stereo you’ve forgotten about.
4. In a browser, some browsers block sound until you interact with the page. Tap a control to trigger it manually.

• Grant microphone permission. iOS: Settings → Ingrain → Microphone. Android: Settings → Apps → Ingrain → Permissions → Microphone. In a browser, click the padlock in the address bar.
• Close other apps using the mic — a call, a voice memo or a meeting will hold it.
• Find a quieter spot. Background noise degrades recognition badly.
• Browser support varies. Chrome, Edge and Safari work best. On Firefox, use one of the others or the mobile app.

1. You need an account. Guest progress lives only on the device it was made on. This is the most common cause by a wide margin.
2. Sign in with the same email on both devices.
3. Check your connection, then close and reopen the app to force a sync.
4. Give it a moment — sync runs in the background after a session ends.

If you created an account after building up guest progress, that local progress uploads when you sign up. If it looks like it didn’t, contact us before resetting anything.

First, don’t reset anything or reinstall — that can make recovery harder.

• Were you signed in? If you used Ingrain as a guest and deleted the app, cleared storage or switched devices, local data is gone and we have no copy.
• Are you in the right account? Check Settings → your email. It’s easy to have created a second account.
• Did someone use Reset Progress or Reset App? Both are permanent.

If you had an account and progress is still missing, contact us with your account email.

That’s spaced repetition doing its job, though it can feel like nagging.

Each passage has a recall score that decays over time. Answer correctly and the gap stretches out. A verse returning often usually means it’s newly Ingrained and still in short intervals, or a recent answer was marked incorrect.

Two things to check: on Flashcard, tapping Not quite shortens the interval — be honest but not harsh. And if Speak It misheard you, that counts as a miss.

• Streaks roll over at midnight in your device’s local timezone. Travel or practising close to midnight can surprise you.
• The session has to complete. Abandoning a lesson partway doesn’t count the day.
• Audio sessions — make sure you also completed the on-screen review, or the day may not register.
• Ingrain+ members — if a streak freeze was available it should have been used automatically. If it wasn’t, tell us the date.

You may occasionally see stray formatting such as <em> appearing as a word, most often in Word Study on KJV verses.

This comes from how the KJV marks words translators supplied for readability — conventionally printed in italics. In a few places that formatting is displayed instead of applied. It’s a display issue only. The Scripture text is correct and your progress isn’t affected. Sending us the verse reference genuinely helps.

Please tell us — accuracy matters more to us than almost anything else in this app. Use the form below, choose Report incorrect content, and include the reference, your translation, and what you believe it should say.

One thing worth knowing: our translations are historical public domain texts and they legitimately differ from each other and from modern translations. Young’s Literal and the Douay-Rheims in particular read very differently from the KJV. That’s a real difference in the source text, not an error.

1. Force close and reopen.
2. Restart your device. Fixes more than it has any right to.
3. Update Ingrain — the issue may already be fixed.
4. Check free storage. Ingrain stores the full Bible and cached audio locally, and a nearly full device causes odd failures.
5. In a browser, try a hard refresh (Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + R).

1. Check Settings → Notifications inside Ingrain — if it shows “Off”, turn it on there first.
2. Allow notifications at device level — iOS: Settings → Notifications → Ingrain. Android: Settings → Apps → Ingrain → Notifications.
3. Check Focus, Do Not Disturb or Bedtime modes.
4. Android battery optimization can suppress scheduled notifications. Excluding Ingrain usually fixes it.

Yes — Ingrain is an online app. It needs a connection to load Scripture, generate and stream verse audio, sync your progress, and run anything involving your account or groups.

Audio you’ve already heard is cached, so replaying a verse is instant. But plan on having signal when you sit down to practice.

If the app seems stuck or a screen won’t load, a weak connection is the first thing to check.

Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, so cancellation happens there — not inside Ingrain. We can’t cancel it for you.

On iPhone or iPad:

1. Open Settings and tap your name
2. Tap Subscriptions
3. Tap Ingrain, then Cancel Subscription

On Android:

1. Open the Google Play Store
2. Profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
3. Tap Ingrain, then Cancel subscription

You can also reach your subscription from Settings → Ingrain+ Active → Manage subscription.

1. Tap Restore Purchases at the bottom of the Ingrain+ upgrade screen. This fixes the large majority of cases.
2. Check you’re using the same store account that made the purchase.
3. Give it a few minutes. Store systems occasionally lag behind the payment.
4. Force close and reopen the app.
5. Purchases don’t transfer across platforms. An iOS purchase is tied to your Apple ID; an Android one to your Google account.

Refunds are handled entirely by Apple and Google. We aren’t able to issue them — we never receive your payment directly.

Apple: go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find Ingrain and request a refund.

Google: Google Play → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history, find the purchase and choose Report a problem.

If something about Ingrain caused the problem, tell us anyway — we’d rather fix it than have you leave.

Nothing is deleted. Your memorized verses, milestones, streaks and history stay exactly as they are, and you keep the Bible, all 21 topic packs, every exercise type, quizzes and trivia.

You lose access to the Ingrain+ extras — hands-free audio, chapter plans, creating custom lists and groups, streak freezes and analytics. Your existing lists and plans aren’t deleted; resubscribing restores full access.

No. You can use Ingrain as a guest with no signup at all. We built it that way deliberately.

An account does one thing: it backs your progress up and syncs it across devices. It’s free, needs only an email and password, and it’s the only protection against losing everything if your phone does.

Go to Settings → Sign In / Create Account. You’ll need an email and password — there’s no social login, by design. Existing guest progress uploads to your new account when you sign up.

Settings → your email address → Change Password. Enter your current password and the new one twice.

Use Forgot password on the sign-in screen and we’ll email a reset link. If it doesn’t arrive within a few minutes, check spam and confirm you’re using the address you signed up with. For security we’ll only ever send a reset to the address on the account.

Not directly in the app. Contact us — Ingrain+ members can use Settings → Premium Support, everyone else can use the form below. Write from your current account email and tell us the new address. We’ll verify both before making the change.

Settings → your email address → Two-Factor Authentication. Ingrain uses email-based two-factor — a code is emailed to you when you sign in. Worth enabling if your account holds a lot of progress.

You must be at least 13 to create an Ingrain account. A younger child can use Ingrain as a guest under a parent’s supervision, without an account and without us collecting information about them.

It’s the practice of reviewing something at growing intervals, timed to just before you’d forget it. Each successful recall pushes the next review further out.

It’s one of the most reliably replicated findings in learning research, and it’s how medical students hold onto tens of thousands of facts. Ingrain applies it verse by verse, which is why a short daily session beats a long weekly one.

To keep momentum, yes — and momentum determines whether you’re still doing this in six months. Spaced repetition works by touching each verse briefly, many times, at the right intervals. On days you want to do more, nothing stops you.

Seven, all free: King James Version (KJV), World English Bible (WEB), American Standard Version (ASV), Berean Standard Bible (BSB), Bible in Basic English (BBE), Young’s Literal Translation (YLT), and the Douay-Rheims 1899 (DRA). All are public domain, which is what lets us include them at no cost to you.

Those translations are under copyright, and licensing them for an app that generates audio and breaks verses into exercises is restrictive and expensive. We’d rather give you seven complete translations for free. If licensing terms change, we’ll revisit it.

Every passage climbs four tiers, earned only by clearing every exercise in each:

• Introduced — you’ve read it in context and heard it read aloud
• Familiar — you can recognize it and match it to its reference
• Learning — you can rebuild it from missing words or shuffled order
• Ingrained — you can speak it and write it from memory

Mastered goes one step further: an Ingrained verse that’s held a high recall score through quiz testing.

Some passages aren’t complete thoughts on their own. Romans 8:38–39 is the obvious example — memorizing verse 38 alone leaves you stranded mid-sentence. Ingrain groups these so you learn the complete thought.

The app bundles all seven translations plus Strong’s Concordance, cross-references and the dictionary, so the initial install is larger than a typical app. Verse audio is cached as you hear it, so storage grows gradually with use. Clearing the app’s cache removes cached audio; it re-downloads when needed.

No. Ingrain is a memorization and study tool, not a teaching platform. We include translations from a range of traditions — including the Douay-Rheims, from the Catholic tradition — and the study resources are historical public domain reference works rather than commentary.

The app is unashamedly Christian in purpose. It isn’t aligned to a denomination.
