Ingrain Support

The plan is deliberately durable — it’s saved against that Scripture so your progress stays coherent across every place you might launch from. If you need a different arrangement, contact us with the reference and we’ll help.

Because reciting three sections separately is genuinely easier than reciting the verse straight through — the joins are where people stumble. Bring it together is the step that tests the real thing. Look for it on the verse in My Verses or on your Ingrain Minute.

That’s intended. Once a verse is Ingrained, reinforcement always covers the complete canonical verse. Reviewing Part 2 in isolation would strengthen a fragment rather than the verse you actually want to keep.

A verse you memorized elsewhere stays visible in My Verses and keeps its own progress, but it doesn’t automatically tick off a block in a passage plan.

The reason is that a passage is an ordered journey. Knowing verse 4 on its own is different from being able to move from verse 3 into verse 4 and on into verse 5 — and that sequencing is the thing a plan is building. You’ll move through it quickly, but you do move through it.

No. Deleting a plan removes the journey, not your progress. Every verse you learned keeps its milestones and stays in My Verses.

Creating custom lists and custom passage plans is an Ingrain+ feature. You’ll still see the option rather than having it hidden — tapping it explains what’s included.

Joining groups, using Favorites, all 56 curated topic lists, all 36 curated passage plans and every exercise type stay free.

That’s expected. Lists shared by a group leader are a read-only view of that group’s content, so members all see the same thing. Your own lists are fully editable.

A topic list is a collection of individual verses gathered around a theme — anxiety, gratitude, God’s promises. You work through them in whatever order suits you.

A passage plan is a continuous stretch of Scripture — Psalm 23, the Beatitudes, 1 Corinthians 13 — built in order, with connection steps that join each part to the next so you can recite the whole thing rather than its pieces.

If you want verses about something, start with a topic list. If you want to know a passage by heart, in order, start with a passage plan.

No. Every curated list and passage plan is free, there’s no limit on how many you add, and none of them require Ingrain+. Ingrain+ is for creating your own lists and plans.

Yes. Archive it to tuck it away while keeping it, or delete it to remove it from your library. Either way your verse progress stays — see Archiving & deleting.

That’s deliberate. Compass would rather return four strong verses than pad the list out to a fixed number with weak matches.

If you want more, try widening the topic — “grief” will usually surface more than “grief after losing a grandparent in winter.” You can also run Compass again on the same list with a different phrasing; it won’t re-suggest what you’ve already added.

You’ll get a clear empty state with two ways forward: Try another topic, or Search Scripture to find verses yourself.

Very specific, very modern, or very abstract phrasings are the usual cause. Try describing the underlying need rather than the situation — “fear about the future” tends to work better than naming a particular circumstance.

Then leave it out — that’s exactly what the review step is for. Compass surfaces candidates; it doesn’t decide.

If it’s consistently off for a topic that should be well covered, tell us. That kind of specific feedback is genuinely useful.

No. The only thing Compass works from is the topic you type into the box. It doesn’t look at your lists’ contents, your notes, your highlights or anything else about you.

Ingrain Study is an Ingrain+ feature and needs an account so we can check your subscription. As a guest you’ll be routed to sign-in; without Ingrain+ you’ll see what the upgrade includes.

No. A Study request sends four things: the verse you picked, your translation, which angle you chose, and a little of the surrounding passage. That’s it.

It does not send your email, your account, your progress, your streaks, your lists, your highlights, or any record of what else you’ve been reading. And we don’t keep a log of which verses you’ve studied. Full detail is in §3.10 of the Privacy Policy.

That’s expected. Responses are cached by verse, translation, angle and prompt version — not by person — so a common request is answered instantly instead of regenerating every time. The cache holds Scripture-derived text and isn’t tied to anyone’s account.

There’s no normal daily allowance, so this isn’t a quota you’ve used up. What you’ve hit is an anti-abuse guard on new generations — an unusual burst of uncached requests in a short window.

Wait a few minutes and try again. Revisiting a verse you’ve already studied is served from cache and isn’t affected. If you keep seeing it in ordinary use, tell us — that’s a bug, not your fault.

Trust that instinct and check it against Scripture and a real commentary. Then please report it with the verse, the angle, and what was wrong — specific reports let us improve how the feature is grounded.

We’d genuinely rather hear that something was inaccurate than have it sit there.

• Check your connection. Study needs one — unlike the reader itself, which works offline.
• Confirm you’re signed in and your Ingrain+ subscription is active.
• Try a different verse or angle. If one works and another doesn’t, that’s useful — include it if you contact us.
• Try again shortly. The AI service occasionally times out; that’s usually temporary.

Backgrounds load over the internet, so if you’re offline or on a poor connection Ingrain falls back to a bundled image from the same category, or to a solid colour. Nothing is broken — reconnect and the full collection comes back.

This is also why the home screen widget uses a built-in image: widgets never make their own network requests.

Not at the moment — the collections rotate. You choose the style (Art, Photos or Solid) and Ingrain picks within it, though you can change the visual when you share a particular verse.

The artwork is public domain, drawn from museum collections, and each piece is credited where it appears. The photographs come from a reviewed collection licensed for use without crediting the photographer, which is why you won’t see a name on those.

We host all of them ourselves rather than pulling from an image network, so no advertising or tracking service is involved in showing you a verse.

That’s intentional. Practising from Saved Questions is untimed and deliberately doesn’t touch your XP, your Daily Challenge, or your missed-question review progress.

The reason is that saved questions are for learning — you’ve bookmarked them because you want to understand them, and you should be able to work through one as many times as you like without it inflating your level or clearing a review you still need.

Challenge tiers unlock as your XP and level rise, so keep playing the Daily Challenge and they’ll open up. That part isn’t a paid gate.

Quick Round itself is different — it’s an Ingrain+ feature. If the whole card is dimmed with an Ingrain+ required badge, that’s the subscription, not your level.

A quiz or a memorization lesson keeps your study-day streak. Trivia is there for Bible knowledge and for the evenings when a lesson is too much — check the streak indicator on Today if you want to be certain the day is safe.

If it’s missing from My Lists, check your Archive in the Library tab first — an archived list is hidden from the main library on purpose, not gone.

If it isn’t there either and you’re signed in on more than one device, give it a moment to sync and reopen the app. Still missing? Contact us with your account email.

No. Deletion is permanent and we can’t restore it for you — which is exactly why archiving exists. If you’re unsure, archive it instead.

Your verse progress is unaffected either way, so you can rebuild a list from verses you’ve already learned without starting over.

The other device clears it the next time it syncs while signed in. Open the app there, give it a few seconds, and it should disappear.

If it persists after that, sign out and back in on that device.

• The video must be public. Private, unlisted or members-only videos can’t be read.
• It needs captions or a transcript. If the source has no transcript available, there’s nothing to read. Try pasting the text directly instead.
• Not every site is supported. If a link fails, copy the transcript and paste it in as text — that always works.
• Very long recordings may take a while or hit a limit. Try a shorter section.

Reference detection is automated and it won’t be perfect. It reads a transcript, so anything the transcript got wrong — a misheard book name, a number transcribed incorrectly — carries through.

It also has to make judgement calls when a speaker paraphrases without naming a reference, or says something like “the next chapter.” Some of those it will catch; some it won’t.

That’s exactly why you review the list before it’s created. Remove anything wrong, and if it consistently misses a particular kind of reference, tell us — that feedback is genuinely useful.

The feature is rate limited to keep it working well for everyone and to prevent abuse. If you’ve hit a limit, wait a while and try again. If you have a legitimate reason to need more, get in touch.

• Open Ingrain. Widgets refresh from the app, so opening it once will bring the widget up to date.
• Your phone controls widget refresh timing to save battery, so updates aren’t instant. This is normal and not something the app can override.
• Check Low Power Mode — it reduces background refresh significantly.
• Still stuck? Remove the widget and add it again.

Open the Ingrain app at least once after installing or updating — widgets don’t appear in the picker until the app has run. If it’s still missing, check that you’re on the latest version from the App Store.

If the session shows the headphones icon and the verse reference but never begins:

1. Keep the app in the foreground while it starts. The session needs the screen awake to begin. Once it’s running you can lock your phone.
2. Check your connection. Verse audio is generated and streamed from our servers. Audio you’ve heard before is cached and starts instantly; a new verse needs signal.
3. Close and reopen the session from Today → Finish Hands-Free follow-ups.
4. Try a verse you’ve already listened to — verses with cached audio start immediately.
5. On the web app, browser autoplay and screen-wake rules are stricter than on mobile. If a session won’t start in your browser, use the iPhone or Android app instead.

If it’s still stuck, tell us the verse reference and whether you’re on iPhone, Android or web — that narrows it down immediately.

That’s expected, and it catches most people out.

An audio session gets the material introduced — it doesn’t carry it all the way on its own. Go back to Today → Finish Hands-Free follow-ups, where anything you’ve listened to but not yet reviewed is listed, and work through the on-screen exercises. That retrieval work is what moves it toward Ingrained.

1. Check your device isn’t muted. On iPhone the physical silent switch mutes app audio even with the volume up.
2. Turn media volume up while audio is playing, so you’re adjusting media rather than ringer volume.
3. Disconnect Bluetooth — audio may be routing to a speaker or car stereo you’ve forgotten about.
4. In a browser, some browsers block sound until you interact with the page. Tap a control to trigger it manually.

No. Typing and speaking are graded identically and both count as full production recall. Speaking has one advantage — it’s closer to reciting a verse to someone in real life — but if typing is what gets you practising, type.

Typing is also the right choice on a browser that can’t do speech recognition, in a quiet room, or anywhere speaking aloud would be awkward.

• Grant microphone permission. iOS: Settings → Ingrain → Microphone. Android: Settings → Apps → Ingrain → Permissions → Microphone. In a browser, click the padlock in the address bar.
• Close other apps using the mic — a call, a voice memo or a meeting will hold it.
• Find a quieter spot. Background noise degrades recognition badly.
• Browser support varies. Chrome, Edge and Safari work best. If your browser can’t do speech recognition, Ingrain tells you and points you to Type Instead — you type the verse out and it’s scored the same way, so you’re never blocked. Speech recognition in the iPhone and Android apps is generally the most reliable.

1. You need an account. Guest progress lives only on the device it was made on. This is the most common cause by a wide margin.
2. Sign in with the same email on both devices.
3. Check your connection, then close and reopen the app to force a sync.
4. Give it a moment — sync runs in the background after a session ends.

If you created an account after building up guest progress, that local progress uploads when you sign up. If it looks like it didn’t, contact us before resetting anything.

First, don’t reset anything or reinstall — that can make recovery harder.

• Were you signed in? If you used Ingrain as a guest and deleted the app, cleared storage or switched devices, local data is gone and we have no copy.
• Are you in the right account? Check Settings → your email. It’s easy to have created a second account.
• Did someone use Reset Progress or Reset This Device?Reset Progress clears memorization, passage-plan, quiz, trivia and streak progress across your devices, but keeps your account and your library — settings, lists, highlights, favorites, saved trivia questions and groups all survive it. Reset This Device clears this device and returns it to onboarding. See Resetting a device.

If you had an account and progress is still missing, contact us with your account email.

That’s spaced repetition doing its job, though it can feel like nagging.

Each passage has a recall score that decays over time. Answer correctly and the gap stretches out. A verse returning often usually means it’s newly Ingrained and still in short intervals, or a recent answer was marked incorrect.

Two things to check: if Speak It misheard you, that counts as a miss.

• Streaks roll over at midnight in your device’s local timezone. Travel or practising close to midnight can surprise you.
• The session has to complete. Abandoning a lesson partway doesn’t count the day.
• Audio sessions — make sure you also completed the on-screen review, or the day may not register.
• Ingrain+ members — if a streak freeze was available it should have been used automatically. If it wasn’t, tell us the date.

You may occasionally see stray formatting such as <em> appearing as a word, most often in Word Study on KJV verses.

This comes from how the KJV marks words translators supplied for readability — conventionally printed in italics. In a few places that formatting is displayed instead of applied. It’s a display issue only. The Scripture text is correct and your progress isn’t affected. Sending us the verse reference genuinely helps.

Please tell us — accuracy matters more to us than almost anything else in this app. Use the form below, choose Report incorrect content, and include the reference, your translation, and what you believe it should say.

One thing worth knowing: our translations are historical public domain texts and they legitimately differ from each other and from modern translations. Young’s Literal and the Douay-Rheims in particular read very differently from the KJV. That’s a real difference in the source text, not an error.

1. Force close and reopen.
2. Restart your device. Fixes more than it has any right to.
3. Update Ingrain — the issue may already be fixed.
4. Check free storage. Ingrain stores the full Bible and cached audio locally, and a nearly full device causes odd failures.
5. In a browser, try a hard refresh (Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + R).

1. Check Settings → Notifications inside Ingrain — if it shows “Off”, turn it on there first.
2. Allow notifications at device level — iOS: Settings → Notifications → Ingrain. Android: Settings → Apps → Ingrain → Notifications.
3. Check Focus, Do Not Disturb or Bedtime modes.
4. Android battery optimization can suppress scheduled notifications. Excluding Ingrain usually fixes it.

Yes — Ingrain is an online app. It needs a connection to load Scripture, generate and stream verse audio, sync your progress, and run anything involving your account or groups.

Audio you’ve already heard is cached, so replaying a verse is instant. But plan on having signal when you sit down to practice.

If the app seems stuck or a screen won’t load, a weak connection is the first thing to check.

Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, so cancellation happens there — not inside Ingrain. We can’t cancel it for you.

On iPhone or iPad:

1. Open Settings and tap your name
2. Tap Subscriptions
3. Tap Ingrain, then Cancel Subscription

On Android:

1. Open the Google Play Store
2. Profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
3. Tap Ingrain, then Cancel subscription

You can also reach your subscription from Settings → Ingrain+ Active → Manage subscription.

1. Tap Restore Purchases at the bottom of the Ingrain+ upgrade screen. This fixes the large majority of cases.
2. Check you’re using the same store account that made the purchase.
3. Give it a few minutes. Store systems occasionally lag behind the payment.
4. Force close and reopen the app.
5. Purchases don’t transfer across platforms. An iOS purchase is tied to your Apple ID; an Android one to your Google account.

Still locked? Contact us with the store you purchased from and the approximate date. Please don’t send full payment card details — we don’t need them and can’t accept them.

A one-time $79.99 payment that unlocks every Ingrain+ feature permanently. No subscription, no renewal, nothing to cancel. It restores across your devices through your store account.

To be straightforward about it: “lifetime” means the lifetime of the Ingrain service, not your own. It covers Ingrain+ as it exists today and features we add to that tier later, for as long as we operate Ingrain. The full wording is in our Terms of Use.

Refunds are handled entirely by Apple and Google. We aren’t able to issue them — we never receive your payment directly.

Apple: go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find Ingrain and request a refund.

Google: Google Play → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history, find the purchase and choose Report a problem.

If something about Ingrain caused the problem, tell us anyway — we’d rather fix it than have you leave.

Nothing is deleted. Your memorized verses, milestones, streaks and history stay exactly as they are, and you keep the Bible, all 56 curated topic lists, all 36 passage plans, every exercise type, quizzes and trivia.

You lose access to the Ingrain+ extras — hands-free audio, chapter plans, creating custom lists, Scripture Compass, sermon import, creating groups, streak freezes and analytics. Your existing lists and plans aren’t deleted; resubscribing restores full access.

Use Reset Progress, not Reset This Device and definitely not account deletion. It wipes the learning slate while keeping your account, your lists, your favorites and your groups.

No. You can use Ingrain as a guest with no signup at all. We built it that way deliberately.

An account does one thing: it backs your progress up and syncs it across devices. It’s free, needs only an email and password, and it’s the only protection against losing everything if your phone does.

Go to Settings → Sign In / Create Account. You’ll need an email and password — there’s no social login, by design. Existing guest progress uploads to your new account when you sign up.

No. This is worth being specific about, because it’s the thing people most reasonably worry about.

Creating a new account carries your guest progress straight into it.

Signing into an account you already have doesn’t pick a winner. Ingrain takes a snapshot of what’s on the device, fetches what’s on your account, and merges them — progress, passage plans and where you are in them, lists, highlights, favorites, saved trivia questions, quiz history and streaks. Neither side is thrown away.

If the connection drops partway, your guest snapshot is held rather than discarded, and the merge finishes next time you’re online.

Settings → your email address → Change Password. Enter your current password and the new one twice.

Use Forgot password on the sign-in screen and we’ll email a reset link. If it doesn’t arrive within a few minutes, check spam and confirm you’re using the address you signed up with. For security we’ll only ever send a reset to the address on the account.

Not directly in the app. Contact us — Ingrain+ members can use Settings → Premium Support, everyone else can use the form below. Write from your current account email and tell us the new address. We’ll verify both before making the change.

Settings → your email address → Two-Factor Authentication. Ingrain uses email-based two-factor — a code is emailed to you when you sign in. Worth enabling if your account holds a lot of progress.

You must be at least 13 to create an Ingrain account. A younger child can use Ingrain as a guest under a parent’s supervision, without an account and without us collecting information about them.

That’s working as intended, though we understand the confusion. Contributions and subscriptions are completely separate: a contribution is a gift with nothing given in return, while Ingrain+ is a subscription purchased through Apple, Google or the web.

If you contributed believing it would unlock Ingrain+, email us. We’ll sort it out — either refunding it or helping you get set up properly. We’re not interested in keeping money someone gave by mistake.

Stripe emails you a payment receipt, so you’ll have a record of the transaction. But we can’t issue a charitable donation receipt, because a contribution to Ingrain isn’t a charitable donation — we’re a for-profit company, not a 501(c)(3).

Please don’t claim a contribution as a charitable deduction. If you’re unsure how to treat it, ask your own tax advisor.

Use the management link in the receipt Stripe emailed you. If you can’t find it, contact us with the email address you contributed from and we’ll stop it.

Just ask. Contributions are voluntary gifts and technically non-refundable, but if you gave by mistake, gave more than you meant to, or someone used your card without permission, tell us and we’ll review it in good faith.

• Codes apply during onboarding and once per account. If you’ve already finished setting up, the code can’t be added afterwards.
• Check for typos — and for a stray space if you pasted it.
• Codes can expire or be withdrawn.

If it’s a legitimate code from one of our partners and it still won’t take, send it to us with where you got it and we’ll look.

Your account simply returns to the Free tier. Nothing gets charged, because nothing was purchased — a referral benefit is a temporary grant, not a trial attached to a payment method. There’s nothing to cancel.

If you want to keep the Ingrain+ features, you can subscribe at any point.

It’s the practice of reviewing something at growing intervals, timed to just before you’d forget it. Each successful recall pushes the next review further out.

It’s one of the most reliably replicated findings in learning research, and it’s how medical students hold onto tens of thousands of facts. Ingrain applies it verse by verse, which is why a short daily session beats a long weekly one.

To keep momentum, yes — and momentum determines whether you’re still doing this in six months. Spaced repetition works by touching each verse briefly, many times, at the right intervals. On days you want to do more, nothing stops you.

Seven, all free: King James Version (KJV), World English Bible (WEB), American Standard Version (ASV), Berean Standard Bible (BSB), Bible in Basic English (BBE), Young’s Literal Translation (YLT), and the Douay-Rheims 1899 (DRA). All are public domain, which is what lets us include them at no cost to you.

Those translations are under copyright, and licensing them for an app that generates audio and breaks verses into exercises is restrictive and expensive. We’d rather give you seven complete translations for free. If licensing terms change, we’ll revisit it.

Every passage climbs four tiers, earned only by clearing every exercise in each:

• Introduced — you’ve read it in context and heard it read aloud
• Familiar — you can recognize it and match it to its reference
• Learning — you can rebuild it from missing words or shuffled order
• Ingrained — you can speak it and write it from memory

Mastered goes one step further: an Ingrained verse that’s held a high recall score through quiz testing.

Some passages aren’t complete thoughts on their own. Romans 8:38–39 is the obvious example — memorizing verse 38 alone leaves you stranded mid-sentence. Ingrain groups these so you learn the complete thought.

Yes — iPhone, iPad, Android and any modern browser. Create a free account and sign in on each, and your progress, streaks, favorites and settings follow you.

The app bundles all seven translations plus Strong’s Concordance, cross-references and the dictionary, so the initial install is larger than a typical app. Verse audio is cached as you hear it, so storage grows gradually with use. Clearing the app’s cache removes cached audio; it re-downloads when needed.

No. Ingrain is a memorization and study tool, not a teaching platform. We include translations from a range of traditions — including the Douay-Rheims, from the Catholic tradition — and the study resources are historical public domain reference works rather than commentary.

The app is unashamedly Christian in purpose. It isn’t aligned to a denomination.
